Motivation on Wheels - Professional Public Speaking
When Aaron Cross traded his 10-speed for a four-wheeler, it wasn't an all-terrain vehicle -- it was a wheelchair. According to his friends, the chair is a character builder that allows him to push himself to the limits.
Aaron has been a quadriplegic since May 1991 when he was injured in a bicycle race. Almost one year to the day of his accident, Aaron began participating in national and international wheelchair sporting events including archery, wheelchair racing and quad rugby.
What is more important, Aaron competed in the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta, Ga., where he set a world record in the ranking round and came in fourth over all in the archery competition, explaining, "You can't win them all."
You might not win them all; but if you don't try you will never know. One of Aaron's favorite quotes is from Former First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt; "You must try all the things you think you can not do."
Since 1993 Aaron has earned his BA in mass-communication with the emphasis in motivational speaking from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, competed in the last 9 World Championships and the last three Paralympics games. Moreover, Aaron, always being one for trying and accomplishing goals; Aaron has even trained with and completed a U.S. Navy SEAL Adventure Challenge; the only person in a wheelchair ever to attempt and make it the full 24 hours.
Every good thing comes to an end:
Deciding to retire from international archery competition after the 2004 Paralympic games in Athens, Greece, Aaron vowed to finish his career on top. On September 23, 2004, he and his Teammates shot their way to the Bronze medal; the first team medal for the U.S. Paralympic Archery Team.
Tomorrow is another day:
After taking two years off from archery, the drive seems to be coming back. Desire to travel, shoot and win is back. "Competition is always in my heart; I need to always be pushing myself, I miss the thrill of shooting international events Cross says.
It is time to come back and shoot because I want to shoot; and more importantly, I want the gold medal."
